Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed deep gratitude to Canada for its support in the war against Russia during his speech to the Canadian Parliament. Canada, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has been a strong advocate for Ukraine’s defense since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
Canada has committed over C$8 billion (approximately $5.9 billion) in aid to Ukraine in 2022, including C$1.8 billion in military assistance. Zelensky credited Canada’s military support for saving thousands of lives and commended Canada’s leadership in imposing sanctions against Russia.
While acknowledging that the Ukrainian counteroffensive has faced challenges, Zelensky remained resolute in his prediction of an eventual victory. He emphasized the importance of preventing Russia from committing genocide in Ukraine and stated that Moscow must be defeated definitively.
Prime Minister Trudeau announced additional military aid of C$650 million over three years, including armored vehicles and training support for Ukrainian pilots. Canada also plans to offer substantial macroeconomic support in 2024.
Trudeau emphasized Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine and its commitment to a rules-based international order. Canada is dedicated to assisting Ukraine in winning the war.
Canada is home to 1.4 million people of Ukrainian descent, making it the third-largest Ukrainian population after Ukraine and Russia. Trudeau announced further sanctions on 63 Russian individuals and entities involved in the war.
Canada and Ukraine will collaborate to establish a group of experts to advise on the seizure and forfeiture of Russian assets, including central bank assets.
Zelensky’s visit to Canada followed his appeal to US lawmakers in Washington for continued support. While Canada is united in its support for Ukraine, it lacks the same financial and military resources as some other major backers. Security measures were in place in Ottawa during Zelensky’s visit, and Canada’s cybersecurity agency warned against potential malicious threats.
