Drone footage reveals a wildfire ripping through the Greek island of Rhodes, prompting the evacuation of thousands of tourists and residents as fires continue to spread across the nation. The authorities have taken drastic measures to combat the flames and protect the population and visitors to the island.
Forest fires have wreaked havoc across Greece due to high temperatures and a record heatwave hitting the region. Extremely dry conditions and gusty winds have fanned the flames, leading to the declaration of red alerts in several departments, including Attica, where the capital Athens is located.
Given the magnitude of the situation, the Greek government has carried out one of the largest evacuation operations in the country’s history, moving almost 19,000 people out of Rhodes. Hotels, schools, sports centers, and conference centers have been set up in safe areas to house the evacuees and provide them with shelter and assistance.
The British airline Jet2 and the tourist group TUI have suspended all flights and holiday packages to Rhodes due to the seriousness of the situation. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also announced the creation of an assistance service to help tourists return to their countries of origin.
The drone images offer a striking perspective on the extent and intensity of the fires, highlighting the urgency of addressing climate change and taking action to prevent and combat wildfires. It is a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating impact that climate change can have on human life, biodiversity, and ecosystems. The international community must come together to take meaningful action to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect our planet for future generations.
