Serena Williams, the 23-time major winner and former world No. 1, has confirmed that she is expecting her second child. Speaking to reporters at the Met Gala in New York, Williams arrived on the red carpet with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and said, “There were three of us.” The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Olympia, in 2017, and Williams announced last year that she was taking a break from tennis to focus on her family. The announcement appears to make a return to competitive tennis unlikely for Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and is one of the most decorated tennis players of all time.
The theme of this year’s Met Gala was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, in honor of the late Chanel designer, and Williams wore a form-fitting black gown with a white skirt. The annual event is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and is co-chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Williams is a long-time friend of Wintour and a frequent attendee of the event.
Williams’ husband, Ohanian, is an entrepreneur and the co-founder of Reddit. On the red carpet, footage showed him gently resting his hand on Williams’ midsection. Also attending the event was retired 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer, who served as a co-chair. Williams’ announcement that she is expecting another child suggests that she is prioritizing her family and personal life, which could make a return to professional tennis less likely.
