The Met Gala 2023, one of the most highly anticipated fashion events of the year, has paid tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, whose contributions to the fashion industry as creative director of Chanel were “incomparable,” according to Andrew Bolton, chief curator of the Costume Institute.
Lagerfeld, who worked for five major fashion houses, including Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, and Chanel, has been recognized for his professional trajectory, and the theme of the Met Gala this year was dedicated to the designer. Among the attendees were Penélope Cruz, who had a personal and professional relationship with Lagerfeld and was a co-host of the event alongside Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Michaela Coel.
The steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York were once again transformed into an expression of Lagerfeld’s impact on the history of fashion, with guests such as Rihanna, Gigi Hadid, and Jennifer Lopez among the most acclaimed.
The dresses that received the most attention were Penélope Cruz’s Chanel bridal gown from the Spring/Summer 1988 collection, Dua Lipa’s Chanel princess dress from the Fall/Winter 1992 collection, Jennifer Lopez’s Ralph Lauren dress with a headdress, Emily Blunt’s sequined skirt and XL bow-tied blouse by Michael Kors, Kate Moss’s Miu Miu sleep dress, and Naomi Campbell’s pink dress.
