Guillermo del Toro, the Mexican filmmaker, was the big winner of the awards season, taking home the most coveted statuette, the Academy Award, in the Best Animated Feature category for his masterpiece “Pinocchio.” In his speech, Del Toro thanked Netflix for having faith in him and dedicated the award to his wife, children, and deceased parents. Alongside him, Mark Gustafson, Gary Ungar, and Alex Bulkley also won awards for their work directing, producing, and directing the film.
The competition in the Best Animated Feature category was strong, with major projects from Disney and Dreamworks, such as “Turning Red” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” respectively. “Marcel The Shell With Shoes On,” directed by Dean Fleisher Camp, also stood out, starring Andrew Goldman, Elisabeth Holm, Caroline Kaplan, and Paul Mezey.
“Pinocchio” also received other important awards during the awards season, such as the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, the Film Critics Awards, and the BAFTA in the United Kingdom, among others.
On the other hand, the Mexican “Three Amigos” were also present at the 2023 Oscar nominations. Alejandro González Iñárritu was directly nominated for his film “Bardo, a false chronicle of a few truths” in the Best Cinematography category, while Alfonso Cuarón was nominated along with Alice Rohrwacher in the Best Fiction Short Film category for “Le pupille”. Unfortunately, both lost in their respective categories.
