Trump expressed his discontent and criticism of the CNN news network for using the phrase “the Big Lie” when referring to his accusations that Joe Biden had “stolen” the 2020 presidential election. The former president considered that this expression was intended to discredit him and draw comparisons with Adolf Hitler and Nazism.
However, a Trump-appointed judge, Judge Raag Singhal, dismissed the lawsuit filed against CNN. The judge ruled that the network’s comments were not defamatory, as they constituted an opinion and not factually false statements. Although the court recognized that Nazi references in political speech are abhorrent, it found that rhetoric does not constitute defamation when it does not include clearly false statements.
The lawsuit filed by Trump in October accused CNN of using the phrase “the Big Lie” as a direct reference to a tactic employed by Adolf Hitler in his book “Mein Kampf.”
During his tenure as president, Trump had a strained relationship with major media outlets like CNN and The New York Times, which he called “fake news” outlets. However, he now faces scandals and accusations in court, which have tarnished his image, and his relationship with the media remains contentious.
Although Trump did not obtain the desired result in his lawsuit against CNN, his criticism and disputes with the media have been a prominent feature of his presidency and continue to be relevant issues on the political landscape.
