The Region of Murcia and some areas of the Mediterranean coast of Spain experienced a warm storm on Saturday, April 29, 2023. The storm, generated by accumulated heat and humidity, moved from south to north and left a considerable amount of rain in several districts of Alicante and in the city of Murcia. Aemet issued a yellow warning for storm risk in areas of Murcia, Almería, Jaén, Granada, Albacete, Barcelona, Girona, and Lleida.
In Murcia, the rainfall was particularly intense and sudden, and in just one hour, the streets were flooded, trees collapsed, and traffic had to be cut off. In addition, the event forced the evacuation of the 18,000 people attending the Warm Up festival in the city. The festival organization canceled the event due to the magnitude of the storm and the intense rain, which was not expected. The canceled acts included performances by groups such as Franz Ferdinand, Moderat, Viva Suecia, Second, and Amaia.
On Sunday, April 30, Aemet activated a yellow warning for storm risk in some mountainous areas of the provinces of Almería, Jaén, Granada, Albacete, and Murcia. Precipitation is expected mainly in the eastern regions of Catalonia, with about 20 millimeters accumulated in an hour, and maximum temperatures will have a generalized decrease throughout Spain, except in southwestern Galicia. On the other hand, temperatures are expected to be higher in Córdoba, Murcia, Sevilla, Huelva, and Granada.
