During a press conference in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine’s victory over Russia “depends” on Western support. Zelensky called for more arms and ammunition, expressing confidence that the United States will soon unblock a crucial package of military aid. The former Soviet republic has been at war with Russia since February 24, 2022.
Zelensky revealed that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have lost their lives since the start of the Russian invasion two years ago. He claimed that Russia had prior knowledge of the plans for the failed Ukrainian counteroffensive in 2023. Despite Kyiv’s persistence, Western allies have been hesitant to approve new aid to Ukraine in recent months.
The Ukrainian leader made a direct appeal to the United States, where Republican lawmakers have been blocking a $60 billion aid package for Ukraine. Zelensky expressed confidence that the US Congressional vote would be positive, urging a quicker delivery of military aid, especially ammunition, anti-aircraft defense systems, and fighter jets.
Zelensky also lamented delays in the delivery of Western weapons, noting that half of the commitments were not fulfilled on time. The situation puts Ukraine at a greater disadvantage in the war against Russia, according to Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, implying “human and territorial losses.”
