Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a passionate appeal at the World Economic Forum in Davos, urging Western nations to strengthen sanctions against Russian leader Vladimir Putin and to bolster support for Kyiv in its ongoing struggle. Zelensky emphasized the critical need for swift action, asserting that hesitation and fears of an escalated conflict were costing lives and risking prolonged fighting.
Expressing concern over Western hesitancy, especially amid political debates in Washington and Brussels, Zelensky called for a united front against Putin’s aggressive ambitions. He asserted that Putin embodies war, emphasizing the imperative for change within the international community to thwart the madness residing in aggressors’ minds.
With the conflict entering its second year, Zelensky opposed freezing the conflict along its current lines, describing Putin as a predator dissatisfied with frozen outcomes. He highlighted the importance of properly enforcing sanctions on Moscow, emphasizing the weakness in the lack of sanctions on Russia’s nuclear sector.
Zelensky thanked the West for existing sanctions but stressed the need for continuous efforts to ensure their 100 percent efficacy, citing the reward of bringing peace closer. The European Union and NATO leaders echoed Zelensky’s concerns, emphasizing the necessity of consistent financial support and the supply of weapons for Ukraine’s defense.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that support for Ukraine was not charity but an investment in the alliance’s security. As Kyiv shifts to a more defensive stance, the focus remains on securing Western assistance, replenishing manpower, and addressing artillery shortages. Zelensky, having met with key officials on the sidelines of the forum, remains optimistic about unlocking financial support from the European Union and hopes for further aid approval from the United States in the coming weeks.
