Warner Bros.’ thriller “The Nun II” narrowly maintained its top position at the North American box office this weekend with an estimated gross of $14.7 million, according to preliminary data released on Sunday by industry observer Exhibitor Relations.
The ninth installment of “The Conjuring” series, a gothic tale starring Taissa Farmiga, Belgian actor Jonas Bloquet, and Storm Reid, barely edged out the film “Hunting in Venice,” based on an Agatha Christie mystery and featuring Kenneth Branagh, which earned around $14.5 million.
Final figures to determine which of the two films ultimately topped the weekend box office in a relatively low-attendance weekend will be released on Monday.
In third place, with $7.2 million, was “The Equalizer 3,” from Sony, starring Denzel Washington in his latest portrayal of a retired US Marine and drug enforcement agent facing an endless stream of criminals.
Another sequel, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding III,” from Focus Features and Universal Pictures, took the fourth spot with $4.7 million, followed by “Barbie,” which, in its ninth week in theaters, grossed $3.9 million.
The remaining five films on the list of the top ten highest-grossing movies were:
- “Jawan” ($2.5 million)
- “Blue Beetle” ($2.5 million)
- “Gran Turismo” ($2.4 million)
- “Oppenheimer” ($2.1 million)
- “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” ($2 million)
