During a briefing on the findings of the JIT, the home minister of Punjab, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, reportedly stated that the gun attack on Khan was an “organized and well-thought-out conspiracy” and that more than one assailant had attempted to assassinate the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader, who is 70 years old. Khan is currently in critical condition.
The Joint Investigation Team that was tasked with investigating the incident came to the conclusion that the attempt to kill Imran Khan that took place a month ago was part of a “well-thought-out plan.”
On November 3, Khan was leading his long march demanding snap elections when he was fired upon by gunmen in Wazirabad, which is around 150 kilometres away from Lahore. Khan sustained bullet wounds to his leg as a result of this attack.
The minister stated that the primary suspect, Muhammad Naveed, is a “trained assassin” and that he was at the crime scene with his accomplices. Muhammad Naveed is also the main suspect. Earlier, members of the police force took Naveed into custody, and he has been under the JIT’s care since then.
According to Cheema, Naveed did not pass a polygraph examination. The police in Punjab claimed that they had apprehended Naveed from the scene of the crime, and that he had admitted his guilt. Naveed is believed to have admitted in his confessional statement that he planned to assassinate Khan while music was being played during Azan time during his lengthy march. Naveed is accused of saying this.
Khan has previously pointed the finger of blame at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and Major General Faisal Naseer of the ISI for allegedly orchestrating a plot to kill him.
The First Information Report (FIR) was filed by the Punjab police in connection with the attempt to kill Khan; however, the high-profile suspects, including the top officer at ISI, whom Khan considered responsible for the attack, were not mentioned in the filing.
Khan disregarded the FIR, stating that it is nothing more than “a piece of trash” because it does not name Sharif, Sanaullah, or Maj. Gen. Faisal as the heads of the ISI Counter Intelligence Wing in the FIR.
Khan had said, in a statement that was leaked to the media, “I wonder if I, being the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, can’t get a FIR registered in connection with the attack on me and other PTI workers, what will happen to the common man.” In this statement, Khan was insinuating that the powerful military establishment was to blame.
