Racing Club secured first place in Group A and left defending champion Flamengo in second place at the end of the Copa Libertadores 2023 group stage. Inter of Porto Alegre and Nacional of Uruguay also advanced to the round of 16.
Racing Club went into the last matchday of the phase as group leaders and finished as such, with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Ñublense of Chile in Buenos Aires. MatÃas Rojas (50), Gabriel Hauche (53), AnÃbal Moreno (70), and Gonzalo Piovi (86) scored the goals for the team led by Fernando Gago.
In Rio de Janeiro, Flamengo beat Aucas of Ecuador 4-0, but the score was not enough to overtake Racing at the top of the group.
Brazil’s Internacional took first place in Group B with a 3-1 win over Independiente Medellin in Porto Alegre. MaurÃcio (3) and Luiz Adriano (22, 27) scored the goals for the Brazilian team, while Luciano Pons (50) scored for the visitors.
In Group E, Independiente del Valle took the victory in a thrilling match against Argentinos Juniors in SangolquÃ, Ecuador, winning 3-2. Lorenzo Faravelli (23), Lautaro DÃaz (48), and Kevin RodrÃguez (90) scored for the Ecuadorian team, while Mateo Carabajal (44) and Leonardo Heredia (87) scored own goals for the Argentine team.
With these results, the teams that have qualified for the round of 16 are Racing Club and Flamengo (Group A), Internacional and Nacional of Uruguay (Group B), BolÃvar and Palmeiras (Group C), Fluminense and River Plate (Group D), Independiente del Valle and Argentinos Juniors (Group E), Boca Juniors (Group F), Athletico Paranaense and Atlético Mineiro (Group G), and Olimpia and Atlético Nacional (Group H).
One place in the round of 16 remains to be decided in Group F, where Boca Juniors leads with 10 points and will face Monagas of Venezuela. Colo Colo of Chile, with 5 points, will host Deportivo Pereira of Colombia, which has 7 points. The draw for the round of 16 will take place on July 5 at Conmebol’s headquarters in Luque, Paraguay.
