In a surprising turn of events, beloved “Grey’s Anatomy” actor Patrick Dempsey has been crowned People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for the year 2023, succeeding Marvel star Chris Evans. At 57, Dempsey expressed his utter shock upon hearing the news, confessing that he initially thought it was a prank, stating, “I’ve always been the bridesmaid.”
Despite his initial disbelief, Dempsey graciously accepted the honor, emphasizing the positive impact he hopes to make with his newfound recognition. “It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive,” Dempsey shared with People for the cover story.
Dempsey’s popularity soared over the years, largely due to his iconic role as the charming neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd in ABC’s long-running series “Grey’s Anatomy.” His talent also shone in the 2007 musical film “Enchanted,” where he portrayed a modern-day prince charming.
Married to makeup artist and beauty line founder Jillian, Dempsey eagerly awaits his children’s reaction to his latest accolade. With a hint of humor, he remarked, “They’re just going to make fun of me and pick on me and figure out every reason why I shouldn’t be. Which is good; they keep me young.”
In addition to his acting pursuits, Dempsey will grace the screen in December in the biopic “Ferrari,” directed by Michael Mann, where he portrays Italian Formula One driver Piero Taruffi alongside Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz. Dempsey’s tenacity and determination have not only secured him prominent roles in Hollywood but have also driven him to establish the Dempsey Center, a foundation dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their loved ones, founded in honor of his late mother. His multifaceted talents and philanthropic endeavors continue to inspire fans worldwide.
