Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez is set to reunite with his friend Lionel Messi in the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, as Inter Miami officially announced the signing. Suárez and Messi, along with Neymar, formed the iconic MSN trio during their time at Barcelona from 2014 to 2020.
“We are thrilled to welcome world-class forward Luis Suárez… coming off a great season in Brazilian football. He will be a key player in our squad,” stated Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas.
The prolific striker, Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer and Barcelona’s third-highest scorer, committed to Inter Miami for the 2024 season. Suárez, departing from Gremio this month, led the team to the runner-up position in the recent Brasileirao.
Under the management of Argentine Gerardo Martino, Suárez will once again share the pitch with former Barcelona teammates Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.
Expressing excitement about playing alongside Messi, Suárez stated, “Having the best player in the world generates very nice expectations.”
Inter Miami marked the signing with a photo on social media featuring four children in the team’s pink uniform with the names of Suárez, Messi, Alba, and Busquets, accompanied by the caption “Nothing better than playing with friends.”
Suárez, Messi, Alba, and Busquets previously achieved success at Barcelona, winning four La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey titles, and a UEFA Champions League trophy in 2015 during their six seasons together.
Despite Suárez’s departure from Gremio due to reported physical issues, he assured in a video statement that he was “fine both football-wise and physically.” The veteran striker will face a demanding schedule, including MLS, the Concacaf Champions League, and the Leagues Cup, along with representing Uruguay in the 2024 Copa América.
Inter Miami, which finished the previous MLS season at the bottom before Messi’s arrival, is looking to build on their success in the League Cup. With Suárez, Messi, Alba, and Busquets forming a star-studded lineup, their performance and availability will be crucial to the success of the team’s ambitious project under the ownership of David Beckham and others.
