During his press conference on Tuesday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated that natural gas plays a crucial role in the transition to clean energy.
These statements are based on a recent decree issued by the Energy Regulatory Commission, in which natural gas is designated as a form of ‘clean energy’. This pronouncement generated criticism from environmental groups.
President López Obrador mentioned that this measure has already been taken at an international level since there is a difference between what is desirable and what is possible in terms of energy sources. Although there is a desire to dispense with fossil fuels, such as oil and its derivatives, the process of transitioning to clean and renewable energies takes time.
While acknowledging that natural gas is a fossil fuel, he said that it is a preferable option compared to the use of coal, which is still used in countries such as China, the United States, and Germany.
During the conference, reference was also made to the hydroelectric plants in Mexico that are currently out of service. López Obrador assured that the government is carrying out the modernization of 20 of these plants.
In summary, the Mexican president highlighted the role of natural gas as an alternative in the transition process towards cleaner energy sources. Although he acknowledged that it is a fossil fuel, he considered it a favorable option compared to the use of coal and highlighted the government’s efforts to modernize the country’s hydroelectric plants.
