The famous “influencer” Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan have been charged in Romania with organizing a criminal group, human trafficking, and rape, the prosecutor’s office in charge of the fight against organized crime (Diicot) announced on Tuesday. Andrew Tate, a 36-year-old British-American citizen, was arrested in late December after a months-long investigation and is still under house arrest, as is his 34-year-old brother, according to the statement.
The two brothers are suspected of setting up a network in Romania in early 2021, as well as in other countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, according to the same source. Prosecutors explained that investigators identified seven victims who were tricked by the Tate brothers, who pretended to have feelings for them before forcing them, through acts of physical violence and psychological coercion, to participate in the production of pornographic films. Three of the victims filed a civil suit.
According to the detective, one of the suspects committed two cases of rape. In addition, two Romanian women who were arrested simultaneously were charged: a former police officer and Andrew Tate’s girlfriend.
The Tate brothers, who claim to be innocent, have been under house arrest near Bucharest since the end of March, following three months of pre-trial detention in connection with this case. Notably, Andrew Tate also faces allegations of sexual violence in the United Kingdom for events that occurred between 2013 and 2016.
Andrew Tate, a retired boxer, became known for his participation in the reality show Big Brother in the UK in 2016. However, he was quickly voted off after a video of him hitting a woman went viral. Since then, he has focused on social media, where he has become a celebrity, monetizing advice to help men get rich while openly advocating a macho mentality.
Andrew Tate is one of the most searched names on Google, and although he has had his social media profiles suspended in the past due to his misogynistic comments, his Twitter account, which currently has 5.5 million followers, was returned to him when billionaire Elon Musk bought the platform.
