The Hollywood awards season kicked off with the 81st edition of the Golden Globe Awards this past Sunday in Los Angeles. This event marks the onset of a new era for these prestigious accolades, following the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association due to corruption allegations and a lack of diversity within its voting body.
The host of the gala was American actor and comedian Jo Koy. Among the prominently nominated films were the immensely popular and commercially successful “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” leading with 9 and 8 nominations, respectively. “Killer of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” also emerged as strong contenders, each securing seven nominations.
In addition to honoring outstanding achievements in film, the Golden Globes recognize excellence in television. The series “Succession” leads the TV nominations with a total of nine, including Best Drama Series.
This year, two new categories were introduced: highest box office achievement and best stand-up comedy performance. The ceremony unveiled its first set of winners, featuring Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Robert Downey Jr. in supporting roles, along with Ali Wong and Steven Yeun in the limited series or television movie categories.
With the stage set to acknowledge the best in entertainment, the 2024 Golden Globe Awards promise to be a significant milestone in this new phase of the Hollywood awards season.
