Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, ranked number two in the world, faced a disappointing exit from the ATP 500 Rio de Janeiro tournament on Tuesday. The 20-year-old, a favorite to defend his 2022 title at South America’s premier tennis event, withdrew from the competition due to a right ankle injury sustained early in the first-round match against Brazilian player Thiago Monteiro (117).
Alcaraz, known for his dynamic playing style, suffered the injury during the second point of the first game when he attempted a forehand drive. The incident likely occurred due to the challenging conditions on the rain-soaked clay court at Jockey Club, delaying the second day of the tournament by three hours and postponing four matches to the following day.
Despite visible discomfort and a brief return to the court where he displayed glimpses of his skill, Alcaraz eventually retired from the match after Monteiro broke his serve. The Spanish prodigy’s ankle was promptly attended to, with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero watching anxiously from the sidelines.
Monteiro expressed regret over the victory, acknowledging the efforts each player puts into preparing for such tournaments and wishing Alcaraz a swift recovery. This unfortunate exit follows Alcaraz’s unexpected start to the season, with losses in the ATP 250 Buenos Aires semifinals and the Australian Open quarterfinals.
Unable to contend for the Rio Open crown, where he lost in the 2023 final to Britain’s Cameron Norrie, Alcaraz faces a seven-month title drought since his Wimbledon triumph in July. His injury raises concerns about his form and fitness as the tennis season progresses.
