Bradley Cooper’s upcoming film, “Maestro,” unveils the actor’s remarkable dedication to his role as legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein. Cooper, who plays Bernstein in the movie, spent six years preparing to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra in a recreation of Bernstein’s iconic 1976 performance of Mahler’s ‘Resurrection’ Symphony No. 2 at Ely Cathedral.
In a recent New York screening alongside co-stars Carey Mulligan and Matt Bomer, Cooper shared insights into the challenging scene set in Ely Cathedral, expressing that he was “terrified” and emphasizing the extensive preparation required for the live performance. The scene involves the real London Symphony Orchestra, a 100-strong chorus, and two soloists.
The first glimpse of this demanding scene appeared in the film’s second trailer, released on October 25. Cooper recounted the live recording with the London Symphony Orchestra, stating, “I had to conduct them.” The actor dedicated six years to learning how to conduct the six-minute-and-21-second musical piece.
Cooper credited star conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the film’s ‘conductor consultant,’ for providing valuable guidance. Nézet-Séguin created videos with tempo changes, offering Cooper essential materials for practice. The actor expressed his fear of not enjoying the scenes if he hadn’t put in the work.
Members of the London Symphony Orchestra praised Cooper’s dedication, noting that he spoke in Bernstein’s voice even when off-camera. The level of detail in recreating the performance, from the orchestra’s positioning to reproducing event programs, reflects Cooper’s commitment to authenticity.
Early reviews for “Maestro” commend Cooper’s performance and directorship. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, earning a seven-minute standing ovation and reportedly moving Bernstein’s children to tears. Jamie Bernstein, Leonard Bernstein’s daughter, highlighted Cooper’s total immersion in portraying her father and expressed excitement about Carey Mulligan’s portrayal of their mother, Felicia. “Maestro” promises a poignant portrayal of Bernstein’s life and legacy, showcasing Bradley Cooper’s unwavering dedication to the role.
