Apple is gearing up for the launch of its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset on February 2, targeting a share of the market currently dominated by Meta Platforms. Priced at $3,499, this marks Apple’s most significant product launch since the original iPhone in 2007. Pre-orders will be available on January 19 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time.
Unveiled in June 2023, the Vision Pro boasts impressive technology, featuring an exterior display revealing the user’s eyes to the outside world and a new chip processing sensor that processes information faster than the blink of an eye. Users can engage in web browsing, chat, and movie-watching at a resolution exceeding that of a 4K TV. However, the headset requires a constant power source, and, coupled with its high price, early adoption is expected to be limited to wealthy users and tech enthusiasts.
While analysts commend the technology, they anticipate limited initial contributions to revenue due to the device’s high cost. The Vision Pro enters a market filled with devices struggling to gain consumer traction, and it directly competes with Meta, leading to intensified rivalry between the two tech giants. Apple’s headset is priced over three times higher than Meta’s top-of-the-line Quest Pro mixed-reality device, emphasizing Apple’s ambitious foray into the mixed-reality landscape.
