Neal Mohan, who previously served as chief product officer at YouTube and oversaw the elimination of the “Dislike” button, the introduction of YouTube Shorts to compete with Tik Tok, and the creation of YouTube Music, was named CEO of the platform. Since then, he is likely to want to lead the company’s focus on Web 3.0 and has expressed enthusiasm for integrating new features into the platform that could offer new opportunities for content creators and improve the relationship with its audience.
In February 2022, Mohan outlined tentative plans for integrating new features into the platform, including tokenization of content through non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Mohan has noted that NFTs could be an important tool for content creators to develop new revenue streams by enabling them to build deeper relationships with their audiences and collaborate on new projects.
In a blog post, Mohan wrote: “We believe that new technologies like blockchain and NFTs can enable creators to establish deeper relationships with their fans, together, they will be able to collaborate on new projects and make money in ways that weren’t possible before.”
Since the announcement that Mohan would be YouTube’s new CEO, there has been a surprisingly limited amount of criticism on Twitter, even from skeptics who are usually critical of mainstream connections to technology. While the company’s plans for Web 3.0 have yet to be fleshed out, Mohan’s appointment as CEO has led some to speculate that the company may be more focused on integrating new features into the platform.
