The situation in Ukraine continues to be a very complex and sensitive issue in international politics. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been accused of being favorable to Russia, and his recent meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has generated criticism from the United States and some representatives of Ukrainian diplomacy.
Ukraine has invited Lula to visit Kiev so that he can “understand” the reality of Russian aggression in the country. However, Lula has said he wants to launch a peace initiative in the region and has promoted the idea of international mediation in the Ukrainian war.
For its part, the United States has accused Brazil of “echoing Russian and Chinese propaganda” about the conflict, while Ukrainian diplomatic spokesman Oleg Nikolenko has criticized Lula for putting “the victim and the aggressor on the same level” and attacking Ukraine’s allies who are helping it protect itself from “murderous aggression.”
Meanwhile, Russia has launched a diplomatic offensive to convince emerging powers that it is only defending itself against US hegemony. This week, the Russian Foreign Minister will visit Latin America to convey this message to the countries of the region.
