On Tuesday, a plane crash was reported in the city of Winter Haven, in Polk County, Florida, USA. Two small planes collided in midair and crashed into a lake in the vicinity of the area. Authorities confirmed that at least four people died in the incident, although the total number of passengers who were on the aircraft could not be confirmed. Rescue teams are working in the area of the accident in search of possible survivors. Polk County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Staff Steve Lester reported at a press conference that they believe there are other possible fatalities but cannot confirm this information at this time.
Eyewitnesses reported that the aircraft collided with each other and immediately fell into the lake. The incident site is near the Winter Haven Regional Airport. One of the aircraft dipped about seven meters below the surface of the water, while the wing of the other was sticking out of the water. The aircraft involved in the accident have been identified as a Piper J-3 Cub seaplane and a Cherokee Piper 161 fixed-wing aircraft.
The accident investigation is being led by the sheriff’s office, while the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct their own analyses of the incident. This is a sad reminder of the dangers facing air travelers and the importance of aviation safety.
