Police body camera footage captured the dramatic moment when a suspected bank robber was caught in the act after falling from a ceiling into a trash bin. The incident took place in Huron, Ohio, where officers from the Huron Police Department responded to an alarm at the VacationLand Federal Credit Union.
Upon arriving at the scene, the officers heard noises coming from the roof area above the bank’s drive-thru. They noticed a suspiciously placed blue recycling bin under a roof access door. As the officers approached the drive-thru, a banging noise was heard, and the access door suddenly opened with a loud crash.
A suspect dressed in black dropped a backpack containing construction tools from the open access door. The officers, with their weapons drawn, moved closer and waited for the suspect to attempt to exit through the door. When the suspect extended his legs, they swiftly demanded he get on the ground, which he did without resistance.
Startled, the suspect then fell from the ceiling and landed directly into the recycling bin. The officers handcuffed him and successfully apprehended him without any injuries. The suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Tristan Heidl, cooperated with the officers and claimed he was broke.
Heidl allegedly used the recycling bin as a prop to access the bank’s ceiling. He was subsequently charged with breaking and entering, possession of criminal tools, and safecracking, all of which are felonies in Ohio. If convicted, he could face over three years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.
Currently held at the Erie County Jail on a $50,000 bond, Heidl’s capture serves as a testament to the effectiveness of the police response and their use of body cameras in ensuring public safety and apprehending suspects in the act of committing crimes.
