Mohammad Asif, a caretaker at Safari Zoo Lahore, expressed his delight at the arrival of the lion cubs, stating that children are particularly thrilled to see them play inside their enclosure. Asif also mentioned that families keep returning to visit the cubs. The Deputy Director of the Zoo, Ghulam Rasool, said that the birth of the cubs has increased the number of lions in the zoo to 40. He added that the zoo has given 30 acres of its 242-acre space to the lions to roam freely.
However, the recent death of an elephant at a zoo in Pakistan has sparked criticism of the country’s zoos and the treatment of animals. The elephant had fallen into a pond and became critically ill. This incident, along with the deaths of two lions from asphyxiation after handlers tried to remove them from their den using smoke and the deaths of several white tiger cubs, has reignited concern over the welfare of animals in Pakistani zoos.
Despite the criticisms, the arrival of the lion cubs at Safari Zoo Lahore has brought joy to visitors, particularly children, who enjoy watching the playful cubs. The zoo has made efforts to provide ample space for the lions to roam, and their new additions have added to the zoo’s population of big cats. However, it remains important to address the concerns surrounding the welfare of animals in Pakistani zoos and ensure that proper measures are taken to ensure their health and safety.
