“Podemos” and “Izquierda Unida” have been trying to form alliances for the upcoming municipal and regional elections on May 28th. Despite months of tension between the two parties, they managed to reach a last-minute agreement in La Rioja, where they will run jointly. This means that they will now be running together in 10 of the 12 autonomous communities. The deal in La Rioja includes the distribution of lists and resources, with IU’s Henar Moreno at the head of the list and Podemos’ Raúl Pérez in second place. In Logroño, the order of positions is reversed, with Amaia Castro of Podemos leading the list.
However, the agreement fell apart for the city of Cádiz, where the parties were planning to run together. Podemos withdrew from the agreement at the last minute, despite having everything settled the night before. Adelante Cádiz, a coalition consisting of Izquierda Unida, Ganar Cádiz, Equo, and Alternativa Republicana, has instead reached an agreement with Izquierda Gaditana.
Podemos stated that it had put in “great effort” to be part of the new left coalition in Cádiz, but it couldn’t “deceive its members or voters into thinking that, after the emergence of Adelante Cádiz and its electoral impositions in this space, Podemos was really going to be present.” Adelante Izquierda Gaditana will be the name of the new coalition in Cádiz, and it will be led by journalist David de la Cruz.
