On Friday, Canadian law enforcement agencies issued a “danger to public safety” alert due to allegations that two Indo-Canadians were involved in gang activity and the associated violence.
Karnvir Garcha, 24, and Harkirat Jhutty, 22, are both locals of the city of Surrey, which is located within the province of British Columbia. The Surrey unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has identified the two as suspects in this case (BC).
A warning has been issued because, according to a statement released by the Surrey RCMP, there is “a significant threat to the public posed by these individuals through their connection to criminal activity and high levels of violence.” The statement also said that the police believe that anyone who is connected to or in proximity to these individuals may be putting themselves in danger.
Jhutty and Garcha have been warned by the police about genuine threats to their safety, as well as the safety of anyone who connects with them or is in close vicinity to them, according to Inspector Bal Hansra, who is the lead of the major crime squad for the Surrey RCMP.
“Due to their association with gang activity, the drug trade, and violent acts such as shootings, these individuals have put themselves, their families, and the community at risk,” the statement said. In the statement, Staff Sergeant Lindsay Houghton of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU-BC) noted that despite the threats to their lives and the safety of others around them, these individuals had shown little regard for public safety in the community. Houghton also noted that these individuals had shown little regard for
The police warning comes at the end of a year that saw an increase in violent gang activity, particularly in British Columbia, with several incidents involving Indo-Canadians.
The CFSEU-BC issued a warning in August of this year, naming 11 people who were linked to gangs and posed a threat to the public.Of those 11 individuals, nine of them were Indo-Canadians, most of whom had roots in the province of Punjab. CFSEU-BC is the largest integrated police programme in Canada, with members hailing from each and every police department in the province of British Columbia.
The government of India has communicated to the government of Canada in the past its worries regarding “translocational and transnational” gangs that are active in its territory. Information regarding seven Indian gang leaders located in Canada who are directing gang activities in India and their developing nexus with pro-Khalistan elements has been shared between investigative authorities in India and Canada.
This was the second year in a row that the unit issued a notice of this kind, listing individuals who were suspected of being gangsters. Meninder Dhaliwal was one of those named for the year 2021.Due to the fact that he was murdered in the town of Whistler on July 24, he was not included in the 2022 list. Satindera Gill was also killed in the shooting. Both Gursimran Sahota, age 24, and Tanvir Khakh, age 20, are residents of the town of Surrey, and they were the two individuals who were apprehended in connection with this incident.
In May 2021, the Vancouver Police Department identified Dhaliwal as one of six gangsters who posed a threat to the general public solely because they may be possible targets for members of rival gangs. Dhaliwal was one of the criminals on the list.
According to a story in the Vancouver Sun, Sahota and Karman Grewal were both accused of participating in local robberies in 2019. Grewal, who was 28 years old at the time of his death, was gunned down by individuals who were thought to be his rivals outside of the main terminal of the Vancouver International Airport on May 9 of the previous year. Those individuals then opened fire on the police, who were pursuing them as they fled.
In relation to that investigation, there have been no arrests made. It was believed that Grewal was “extremely close” to the notorious mobster Jimi Sandhu, who was extradited to India in 2016.
