Former British military officer Daniel Khalife, who was charged with terrorism offenses and suspected of espionage, was arrested in London on Saturday, ending a three-day escape from Wandsworth prison. Police in the British capital reported his capture, which took place shortly before 11 a.m. local time in west London, where his presence had been reported.
It is suspected that Khalife escaped from prison using straps and hitched himself to a delivery truck from the kitchen of the penitentiary institution.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who was at the G20 summit in India, welcomed the news and thanked the police and the public for their help in capturing Khalife.
The allegations against Khalife relate to crimes committed between January and August 2021 at a Royal Air Force base in Strafford, central England. He is accused of collecting information that could have been used by terrorists or enemies of the United Kingdom, although he has denied these accusations.
In addition to terrorism charges, Khalife is also suspected of acting in favor of Iran, according to reports by the BBC and other media. His arrest comes as a relief to British authorities, who had been working hard to recapture him since his escape from prison.
Khalife, 21, remains in police custody as he faces the charges against him and is expected to face trial in the future.
