During 2022, the Spanish telecommunications sector has been going through a complicated time due to the economic context and the intense competition between the three large operators and emerging companies. This situation has affected Vodafone and Orange financially in recent months.
This week, it was Telefónica’s turn to present its accounts, and the Spanish telecommunications giant has managed to stay afloat in a complicated environment. In its 2022 numbers, Telefónica celebrates having achieved growth in all its international markets.
Spain remains Telefónica’s most important market, accounting for 27% of its total turnover. Over the past year, its Spanish division posted flat growth of 0.6%, reaching a turnover of 12,497 million euros. In the last quarter, growth was 0.2%.
The highlight is that Telefónica España has managed to maintain its revenue growth for seven consecutive quarters and has returned to the positive path of service revenues, which also increased by 0.6%. This is a very important figure for operators, as it shows that their tariffs are profitable.
In terms of the number of customers, Telefónica España has managed to grow slightly in the last year, with an increase of 0.9% in the number of accesses to 40.5 million, both retail and wholesale. The number of mobile customers exceeded 19.3 million, while broadband customers decreased slightly (0.3%) to 5,855,000 accesses, although direct fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services increased by 4%. The number of convergent customers decreased by 2.2% year over year to 4.55 million.
At the international level, Telefónica achieved growth in line with that obtained in Spain, having increased its presence in all the main markets in which it operates.
