In another context, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock has declared a state of animal health emergency due to the detection of eight cases of avian influenza (H5) in wild birds in the states of Esprito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. This measure, which will be in force for 180 days, aims to prevent the spread of the disease to subsistence and commercial birds as well as to preserve wildlife and human health, the Ministry said in a statement.
Minister Carlos Fávaro pointed out that the declaration of a state of emergency will allow the mobilization of funds and collaboration with other ministries and governmental and non-governmental organizations to take preventive measures and avoid the spread of the virus.
In addition, the suspension of fairs, exhibitions, tournaments, and other events involving the agglomeration of birds has been extended indefinitely as a preventive measure since March.
The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) assured in a statement that, despite the detection of cases, there is no risk in the consumption of poultry products and that Brazil continues to be recognized as free of the disease by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), since commercial production has not registered cases of the virus. ABPA also stated that reports of new cases should not affect Brazilian poultry exports.
