One of the most outstanding comments among cybernauts expresses: “We don’t deserve you; you’ve spent three decades doing more for Colombia than the government itself.” Shakira has denounced the deplorable conditions in which children study at a school in the department of La Guajira, Colombia, and has urged the country’s government to provide a decent education.
The singer has revealed that in a school in Uribia, where a representative Guajira girl, who carries the country’s flag, attends, there are no bathrooms, classrooms, dining rooms, or kitchens. In response, Shakira has announced that she will build a new educational unit with all the necessary facilities for the children to study in collaboration with the Pies Descalzos Foundation, an organization she founded in 1997 to support education.
The 46-year-old artist from Barranquilla, Colombia, has called on the government and the private sector to make greater efforts so that children can have a decent education and a better future.
These statements come in the midst of the social crisis in the department of La Guajira, which in 2021 registered the highest monetary poverty rate in the country (67.4%). Earlier this year, indigenous groups blocked roads in different municipalities of La Guajira in protest against child malnutrition, lack of access to drinking water, and inadequate education, among other social problems.
Shakira’s publication generated thousands of reactions on social networks, both from Internet users and politicians, who praised her work in vulnerable areas of the country. However, there were also negative reactions, criticizing the artist for publishing her charitable actions. Despite this, the majority supported the Colombian star and highlighted the work of her foundation, which has helped thousands of children and families in addition to building significant educational infrastructure.
