German Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz expressed his support for the re-election of Joe Biden as US president on Monday, arguing that a possible return of Donald Trump to the White House would be detrimental to both Washington and Berlin.
Scholz said, “I think the current president is better, and for this reason I also hope he will be re-elected,” in response to a question from a student at a primary school in Kleinmachnow, Brandenburg state, according to local media.
The German chancellor pointed out that Biden has a long political career and knows exactly what to do to prevent the world from falling into war, as well as having a strong sense of belonging to his own country.
In contrast, according to Scholz, the figure of Trump divides the United States. He maintained that if everyone is against each other, a good future cannot be built, and for this reason, he considers that the former president represents a great division in the country, which would not be beneficial for either the United States or Germany.
Both Biden and Trump have announced their intention to run for president in elections scheduled for November 2024. However, to become their respective party’s nominee, they will need to win the primaries.
According to the most recent data from the Gallup consultancy, based on a survey conducted between April 3 and 25, Biden’s approval rating has fallen to 37%, his lowest level since the start of his term.
