According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin will pay an official visit to the country on May 23–24. The invitation was extended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
The purpose of the visit is to discuss cooperation between Russia and China in trade and economic spheres. Special attention will be paid to industry, energy, transport infrastructure, and agriculture. Several bilateral agreements are expected to be signed during the visit. In addition to Beijing, Mishustin will also visit Shanghai, where he will participate in a Russian-Chinese business forum.
Relations between Russia and China are close, and Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Moscow in March, stressing that those ties were entering a new era. Unlike other major world powers, China has never publicly condemned Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine.
This week, China sent an emissary to Europe to seek a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine. The envoy, Li Hui, was in Ukraine on Tuesday and Wednesday, and his tour will also include Poland, France, Germany, and Russia.
