In a devastating attack, at least six people lost their lives and 17 others were injured on Saturday when Russian missiles struck a post office warehouse in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine, as reported by local officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared a video on social media showing a severely damaged warehouse amid heaps of debris and a container bearing the logo of the Ukrainian postal operator, Nova Pochta.
The casualties and injuries from the attack “were employees of the company located inside the Nova Pochta terminal,” stated Oleg Sinegubov, the governor of the Kharkiv region. He added that the victims, aged between 19 and 42, were wounded due to shrapnel and the explosion.
In total, 17 individuals were recorded as injured, according to the regional prosecutor’s office. Some of the injured were hospitalized, with doctors fighting to save their lives.
The Russian forces stationed in the neighboring Belgorod region fired S-300 missiles, two of which hit the warehouse, according to the regional prosecutor’s office. The exact number of casualties and injuries is still being determined as debris analysis continues at the site.
In eastern Ukraine, the attorney general announced on Sunday that two bombings killed two people in the Bakhmut district. Further south, in Avdiivka, an industrial town contested by Russian and Ukrainian troops, Kiev’s forces are holding their “protected” positions, Zelensky said in his daily briefing on Sunday. However, the situation remains “difficult” due to the “numerous attacks” by the Russians, according to the president.
In recent weeks, Avdiivka has been targeted multiple times by the Russians, who seek to encircle it. The Ukrainian military also reported destroying a guided missile and three drones launched by the Russians. Russia claimed to have shot down three Ukrainian missiles launched against the Crimea peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014.
Ukraine has been focusing its operations on this strategic area, as it enables the country to supply its troops in southern Ukraine and launch missile attacks from the sea. The ongoing conflict continues to escalate, causing widespread devastation and loss of life.
