British comedian and actor Russell Brand broke his silence on Friday, describing his week as “depressing” in his first statement following allegations of rape and sexual assault, which he did not explicitly reference.
Brand, who has a substantial following on YouTube with 6.6 million subscribers, released a video on his channel to express his gratitude for the support he had received during what he called an “extraordinary and depressing” week.
“I need your support now more than ever,” he added.
While Brand did not directly address the joint investigation by The Times, Sunday Times, and Channel 4, in which four women made accusations of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse against him, he acknowledged the public discussion around the issue.
On Thursday, another woman accused him of indecent exposure.
According to the women’s accounts, the alleged assaults took place between 2006 and 2013, when Brand, known as the former husband of singer Katy Perry, was at the height of his fame, working as a presenter for BBC Radio 2 and Channel 4 and appearing in Hollywood films.
In a video released prior to these allegations coming to light, Brand denied the accusations, asserting that while it was a “very, very promiscuous” period in his life, his relationships were always consensual.
Brand’s statement marks a significant moment in the ongoing conversation about sexual assault allegations and the importance of addressing them openly and transparently. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen how Brand’s career and public perception will be affected.
