Morocco’s Directorate General of National Security reported that the country’s police seized 5.4 tons of cannabis resin at the port of Tangier Med last Saturday. The shipment was hidden in a truck headed for Spain. In addition, police and customs at the same port seized another 60 kilos of cocaine coming from Ecuador and destined for Spain. Both seizures were part of a joint operation by the port’s security forces, who were able to prevent international drug trafficking.
According to initial investigations, the driver of the truck carrying the cannabis resin, a 45-year-old Moroccan man, attempted to use forged export documents to transport the cargo to Spain. The drugs were hidden in the trailer and chassis of the truck, on plates, and in specially installed cavities.
It should be noted that Morocco is the world’s leading producer of cannabis resin, and last year Moroccan police confiscated nearly 100 tons of the substance. The port of Tangier Med, located on Morocco’s northern coast, is a major industrial and port complex that separates Morocco from Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar.
Security and customs authorities at the port of Tangier Med continue to work together to prevent international drug trafficking and ensure security in the region. Importantly, these seizures are an example of the effectiveness of cooperative efforts between countries to prevent the illicit drug trade.
