Jack Teixeira, a member of the US National Guard, was charged with leaking highly confidential documents on the Internet. Federal prosecutors alleged that Teixeira had a history of making violent statements and possessed numerous weapons, making him a continuing national security risk. Prosecutors also noted that hostile nations could help Teixeira flee if he is released from prison.
Teixeira is an Air National Guard information technology and communications specialist and is accused of orchestrating the most damaging leak of classified US documents in a decade. The documents published online revealed US concerns about Ukraine’s military capabilities against invading Russian forces and showed that Washington allegedly spied on its allies, Israel and South Korea.
Teixeira was arrested earlier this month after a weeklong investigation and charged with two counts that carry maximum prison sentences of 10 years and five years, respectively. Prosecutors also alleged that Teixeira made violent statements on social media and sought information about mass shootings online.
Teixeira had a “virtual arsenal of weapons” that included rifles, AR and AK-style weapons, and a bazooka, according to prosecutors. The young man had been enlisted in the National Guard in 2019 and attained the rank of airman first class. Prosecutors argued that Teixeira posed a continuing threat to the national security of the United States and should remain in prison until the start of the trial.
