Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed on Monday that an armed group kidnapped four US citizens in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, on the border with Texas. According to initial investigations, the four Americans crossed the border to buy medicine in Mexico but were kidnapped by an armed group in a pickup truck. A Mexican national was also killed in the incident. US authorities have offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to their release and the arrest of those involved. The FBI is working with Mexico’s Public Security Secretariat in the investigation of the kidnapping.
The kidnapping occurred amid a wave of violence in Tamaulipas, a state that is the scene of disputes between drug cartels. Tamaulipas is one of the states hardest hit by the presence of drug cartels. The United States advises its citizens not to travel to Tamaulipas and classifies it at level 4 in its security alert, the most dangerous for US citizens. In addition to Tamaulipas, the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacán, and Sinaloa are also listed with a level 4 alert by the State Department.
President Lopez Obrador has promised that the entire government is working on the issue and that the governor of Tamaulipas, Americo Villarreal, is working on it.
