The musical adaptation of Paramount Studios’ hit film “Mean Girls” has secured the top spot at the North American box office for the second consecutive weekend, as reported by industry-specialized site Exhibitor Relations.
The student survival story, starring Angourie Rice, Renee Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, Avantika, and Bebe Wood, led the box office with estimated revenues of $11.7 million. Tina Fey, the scriptwriter of the original 2004 film, also has a role in the adaptation, portraying the math teacher, Mrs. Norbury. The film features numerous cameos, including the original protagonist, Lindsay Lohan, and Ashley Park, who played Gretchen Wieners in the Broadway musical.
With a few new releases shaking up the cinematic landscape over the weekend, the top five highest-grossing films maintained their positions from the previous week. Hollywood is anticipating a boost in box office numbers with the announcement of the Oscar nominations.
In second place is the action film “Beekeeper: Death Sentence” from Amazon and MGM, starring Jason Statham. In third place is Warner Bros.’ “Wonka,” followed by Sony’s romantic comedy “Con Todos Menos Contigo,” and Universal and Illumination’s family animation “Ducks!” in fifth place.
The film industry is eagerly awaiting the Oscar nominations, hoping for a significant boost in box office numbers in the coming weeks.
