A year ago, Generation Z’s goal was to get a job in the tech sector with a good salary, job stability, and benefits. However, due to the recent wave of layoffs at large tech companies, many college students and recent graduates are exploring other job sectors. One Vietnamese data science student, Thu Dang, experienced success and then failure when the tech company she was to work for postponed her joining date indefinitely. The tech sector has laid off about 100,000 people in the past six weeks, affecting those who were about to start their careers in the industry.
Despite this, job opportunities still exist in smaller companies and other employment sectors. Career counselors at universities are urging students to consider these options. A survey conducted by Handshake in the summer of 2022 revealed that more than one-third of students in the class of 2023 were willing to consider other sectors due to economic uncertainty. Tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Meta used to be considered safe bets, but this is no longer true. Students are reconsidering their dreams of working at these large companies and are exploring alternative career options.
As the technology sector continues to be unstable, it is important for students to broaden their options and consider other sectors that may be more stable and offer interesting and challenging opportunities. Despite the current uncertainty, there are many opportunities available for students who are willing to explore different options and find a job that fits their skills and goals.
