Former Spanish head of state Juan Carlos de Borbón arrived at the Vigo airport in northwestern Spain aboard a private jet and slowly descended the plane’s stairs, holding on with both hands, as shown in pictures broadcast on public television. Dressed in a navy blue jacket, the 85-year-old emeritus king later traveled in a vehicle to the town of Sanxenxo, where he usually visits the “Bribón” sailboat to compete in regattas.
It is reported that the reason for his visit is his participation in a regatta scheduled for this weekend. This visit comes a few days after the legislative elections in Spain, which did not yield a clear majority and have plunged the country into political uncertainty that could lead to new elections in the near future.
It should be noted that Sanxenxo was also the place chosen by Juan Carlos for his first visit to Spain in May 2022 after going into self-exile in the United Arab Emirates in 2020 due to information about the opacity of the origin of his fortune. At that time, the emeritus king was greeted with acclamations by the people and caused irritation to the socialist government of Pedro Sánchez and to those who believe that he must be held accountable for the suspicions that surrounded his abdication in favor of his son, Felipe VI., in 2014.
Although the Spanish prosecutor’s office detected irregularities in the fortunes of Juan Carlos, in March 2022, the three investigations related to the monarch were archived due to the inviolability that he enjoyed during his term and due to the prescription of possible crimes. His second visit last April was much more discreet, since he limited himself to greeting the press from his vehicle without lowering the window.
Juan Carlos’s presence in Spain remains a subject of controversy and speculation about his past and the legal implications of his actions during his time as head of state.
