At the 80th annual Golden Globes, which took place in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Jennifer Coolidge was one of the stars of the evening, both when she presented an award and when she got her own trophy. This was rather predictable, as it was one of the night’s most anticipated moments.
The star of “White Lotus” made her initial appearance near the beginning of the show to present an award for the finest performance by an actor in a supporting role in a television series. Prior to that, she shared a humorous anecdote about how she was asked to be a presenter at the ceremony.
During one of the longest and most entertaining preambles before presenting an award, Coolidge talked about her fears of tripping over her words while presenting. She joked that someone had suggested she wear Crocs and pay closer attention to the teleprompter. This preamble was part of one of the longest and most entertaining introductions before presenting an award.
Later on, Coolidge came out again when she won the Golden Globe for “outstanding performance by an actress in a supporting role in a limited series” for her now-iconic character Tanya McQuoid in the HBO series. Her contribution was recognized as the best of its kind. (Both HBO and CNN are owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, which is the parent company of both of these networks.)
During her award speech, the actress from “Legally Blonde” singled out the creator of “White Lotus,” Mike White, whom she referred to as the one who had “given [her] hope.” Her speech was equal parts sad and funny.
“Thanks to you, I have the chance to start over. Even if this is the end, which is possible given that you did eliminate me, it makes no difference. “Even if this is the end, you impacted my life in a million different ways,” she added, referring to the conclusion that the critically acclaimed anthology series will reach for her character. “My neighbours are talking to me and doing other things of the sort,” she said. I really mean it. On my hill, I was never asked to any parties, but now everyone is inviting me to their events. I just wanted to let you know that it’s dedicated to you, Mike White.
Then, Coolidge continued to sing White’s praises while he was in the crowd, and White could be seen wiping away tears.
“This is something all of you should know—if you don’t know Mike White, this is what you should know: He is worried about the world, he’s worried about people, he’s worried about friends of his that aren’t doing well, he’s always worried about people, you’re worried about animals, and he really is one of the greatest people I’ve ever [met],” she said. “He is worried about people; he’s worried about friends of his.”
She continued by saying, “I simply want to say, Mike White…” as she brought her eulogy to a close. “I will adore you until the day I die!”
On Tuesday, it was difficult to tell whether Coolidge was cheered more for her victory or for the bizarre presentation she gave.
