Experts are warning about the need for caution when sharing personal data with the artificial intelligence program ChatGPT due to the company’s lack of transparency in managing the information it processes. While ChatGPT is highly efficient at understanding natural language and providing responses, its handling of data raises significant concerns.
Borja Adsuara, a lawyer specializing in digital law, stresses that it is not really known what ChatGPT does with the data and that this lack of transparency in itself represents a risk. Federico Vadillo, a security expert at Akamai, warns that the use of ChatGPT poses risks in terms of data protection and regulatory compliance, especially in relation to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In addition, Vadillo points to the possibility of this unauthorized personal data being transferred outside the European Union.
The opacity in the learning and decision-making processes of artificial intelligence-based systems poses challenges in understanding, control, and ethics, according to Adrian Moreno, a cybersecurity expert. Moreno highlights the need to establish a regulatory framework that addresses these challenges and enables the responsible and secure development and use of AI.
As for deleting personal information, there is no automated or immediate way to do so. Conversations with the system are logged along with user data, and OpenAI has set up a form to request data deletion. However, the company warns that it may not be able to delete such information. This raises privacy concerns and the possibility that the data may be used for other purposes or given to third parties without the user’s knowledge.
Given this situation, experts recommend making conscious use of the information consulted by ChatGPT and being cautious when sharing personal data. Some suggest not entering personal information as a precaution. Ultimately, although ChatGPT offers significant added value, the cost to the user is uncertainty about the treatment of their personal data. To mitigate the risks, it is suggested that you adhere to regulations such as the GDPR and be aware of the potential risks before using the tool.
