Since its launch in November last year, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been used for a variety of tasks, including writing cover letters, children’s books, and helping students with homework. Google has found that, in theory, the search engine would hire the chatbot as an entry-level programmer if it were interviewed.
Amazon employees who tested it claimed that it does a “very good job” answering questions from the customer service department and is “great” at producing informational documents. However, users have also found that ChatGPT can generate incorrect information and make basic math errors.A 2013 Oxford University study concluded that AI could eliminate 47% of jobs in the next 20 years, but this prediction appears to be wrong. Anu Madgavkar of the McKinsey Global Institute explains that human judgment is still needed to avoid errors and biases. Madgavkar states that we should view AI as a tool to improve productivity, not as a complete replacement.
Technology jobs such as software developer, computer programmer, coder, and data scientist are “quite susceptible” to being displaced, according to Madgavkar. Paul Krugman has said ChatGPT could perform information and writing tasks “more effectively than humans.” Even jobs in accounting, considered stable, could be at risk. A 2022 study by Gartner predicted that by 2027, chatbots will be the primary customer service channel for about 25% of businesses.
