The “Life at Home” report from IKEA claims that those who decorate their home in a way that represents their identity have a higher likelihood of experiencing an improvement in their mental health compared to those who do not make this effort. Seeing decorative items such as plants and furniture as ways to express their identity can lead to greater satisfaction with their home and, therefore, better mental health. According to the report, those who perceive their homes as a reflection of their personalities have almost double the chances of experiencing mental well-being in their home.
The study conducted by the furniture and decoration sales giant revealed that 58% of people think that the decoration of their home reflects their identity. The survey was conducted with over 37,000 people from 37 different countries. According to the research, many believe that their home says a lot about them, as who we are and where we live affect how our home looks.
Similarly, the research revealed that approximately one-third of people believe that their possessions remind them of pleasant moments and experiences. Therefore, items such as collections and family photos make their homes a reflection of their identity.
However, it is also possible that the number of objects and memories in the home can have a negative effect. For example, if there are a large number of them, this can result in a tedious task of cleaning and maintenance.
