Iconic Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, known as ‘Ibra’, announced his retirement from soccer at the age of 41 after a remarkable career full of titles, goals, controversy, and injuries in its final stages.
After AC Milan’s 3-1 win over Hellas Verona on the final day of Serie A, Ibrahimovic said on the San Siro pitch, “It’s time to say goodbye to soccer, not only to you. It’s very difficult; I feel a lot of emotions inside me. Forza Milan and goodbye.” Later, at a press conference, he thanked everyone and announced that, starting the next day, he would be a free man, feeling proud of his long career.
AC Milan had previously announced that Ibrahimovic would not renew his contract for next season, but the Swede revealed that his retirement was not only from the Rossoneri but from soccer in general.
Due to recurring injuries, Ibrahimovic had limited participation this season. He returned to competition in February 2022 after surgery on his left knee in May 2022. He only started one game, in March, where he became the oldest player to score in Serie A history.
AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli lamented Ibrahimovic’s retirement and highlighted his contribution to the team. Considered one of the best strikers in history, Ibrahimovic has won numerous titles at club level in different countries but failed to win the Champions League, the only major trophy to elude him.
Born in Malmö in 1981, Ibrahimovic showed his talent from an early age and became a figure known for his spectacular goals and charismatic personality. Throughout his career, he played for prominent clubs such as Ajax, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United, leaving an indelible mark on each of them.
Although his future is unknown, Ibrahimovic has expressed interest in film and could explore that facet in Los Angeles, where he has aroused great admiration for his style of play and extroverted character.
With his retirement, soccer loses one of the most charismatic and talented players of recent decades, and Ibrahimovic’s legacy will remain engraved in the memory of fans around the world.
