Hua Chunying, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, responded to the criticism launched by some members of the Group of Seven (G7) during their recent summit in Japan. Hua rejected statements calling China “the biggest threat to global security and prosperity” and defended her country’s role in the world economy and security.
In a message on Twitter, Hua stressed that China is the main engine of the world economy, contributing to more growth than all G7 members combined. She also noted that China is the top trading partner for more than 140 countries and the second-largest contributor to UN peacekeeping operations.
Hua raised the question of whether China is considered a threat.
Citing data showing the history of military interventions and regime changes by the US, Hua recalled that between the end of World War II and 2001, the US initiated 201 of 248 armed conflicts in 153 regions around the world.
In addition, the Chinese spokeswoman shared an image showing the actual proportion of G7 countries in the world, arguing that this is evidence that they do not have the moral right to speak on behalf of all humanity.
During the G7 summit, the group’s leaders, including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, declared their concern over China’s “economic coercion” and military expansionism, calling China the greatest challenge of the current era in terms of global security and prosperity.
