The city of Dnipro in Ukraine has suffered shelling by Russian troops since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022. In order to protect the civilian population, shelters have been built in the streets that are made of concrete and painted yellow to be easily identifiable. These shelters are spacious inside and have wooden benches for people to sit on during air raid alarms.
The need for such infrastructure is unquestionable. In January, Russian shelling killed 40 people in Dnipro, leaving dozens more wounded and missing. Images from that day showed one building completely destroyed, surrounded by two others that were also badly damaged. The most recent attacks are concentrated in the Donbass town of Bajmut, where the fiercest battles have been fought.
The outcome of the conflict will largely depend on what happens in the coming months. After the first anniversary of the war, many expected a massive attack by Russian President Vladimir Putin, but this did not happen. However, the situation remains tense, and the civilian population continues to suffer the effects of the war in their daily lives. The construction of shelters in the streets is a necessary measure to protect people from shelling, but it does not solve the underlying problem of the war itself.
