Charles Howell III has won his first LIV Golf title at the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico. The 42-year-old golfer had a stellar performance, carding a final-round 63 to finish at 26 under par and win by a whopping eight strokes.
Howell’s victory was not only his first in LIV Golf but also his first professional win in more than 11 years. The American golfer had not won a PGA Tour event since the 2018 RSM Classic, and his last international win came at the 2011 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.
Howell started the final round with a three-shot lead and never looked back, as he birdied five of his first six holes to extend his lead to six strokes. He added four more birdies on the back nine to complete his dominant victory.
In addition to winning the individual title, Howell also led his team, the Crushers Golf Club, to victory in the team competition. Crushers Golf Club finished at 47-under par, four strokes ahead of runner-up Dreamers Golf Club.
Howell’s win at the Mayakoba Classic was his first start in LIV Golf, a new professional golf league that launched earlier this year. The league features a unique team-based format, with players competing both individually and as part of a team.
Following his win, Howell expressed his excitement about the new league and his hope to continue playing in it. He also thanked his family and supporters for their encouragement and his caddy, Wayne Birch, for his role in the victory.
Howell’s victory at the Mayakoba Classic marks a significant milestone in his career and is sure to boost his confidence heading into the rest of the season. With his exceptional performance and dominant win, it’s clear that Howell still has what it takes to compete at the highest level of professional golf.
