The recent regulation of the World Surf League allows for the participation of people who were born as men in female competitions, which has generated controversy in the circuit.
A surf legend like Bethany Hamilton has expressed her discontent and suggested a possible boycott of the event if the new regulations are implemented. Hamilton said she is speaking on behalf of herself and all those women who feel insecure and lack the confidence to express themselves.
She added that she knows many of the championship participants share this opinion but are afraid of being excluded if they speak up. The athlete, who is one of the best in her sport despite losing an arm due to a shark attack, refused to continue competing in the event if the participation of transgender people in female competitions is allowed. She suggested creating a new category for these people so that they can have the opportunity to stand out and demonstrate their love and ability for surfing.
The athlete also made several comments to question the new regulation imposed by the World Surf League (WSL). These questions include: how is this rule handled in other sports such as swimming or athletics; were current surf athletes consulted about their opinions before announcing the new rule; and how will this improve surfing? These questions need answers, and the WSL directors understand that they need to provide them.
